Who said that LOHAS are still a small niche?

LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) consumers are those that pursue a lifestyle based on ecological sustainability and on attention to their own health and that of the planet. Consequently, when shopping, these consumers always choose carefully, are aware of the importance of quality and of the origin of products.
Ernst & Young in a 2008 study was considering three scenarios that trace possible LOHAS developments:
1. Scenario 1 “niche”;
2. Scenario 2 “Mainstream”;
3. Scenario 3 “Boom”.
Evaluating the situation in 2018 the most probable scenario is the “Boom”:
·      consumer behavior: LOHAS becomes dominant lifestyle;
·      supply chain management: integrated management and monitoring of the supply chain;
·      key success factors: quality, credibility, trust.
In 2010, when Bio-Fashion was launched, LOHAS consumers were still difficult to find in Italy and the number of events that were focusing on educating and inspiring this consumers’ cluster for a more sustainable fashion was definitely lower than today.
What follows is a short list of some events on sustainable fashion that I was coordinating in Milan during 2018 or that were organized by very proactive students’ associations and accelerators that involved enthusiasts and the broader community of LOHAS. All these events were fully booked!

Fashion Revolution Week in Milan


#whomademyclothes?
Today, April 24th, is a very important day: it is Fashion Revolution Day, the fifth year anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse in Dahka, Bangladesh. Rana Plaza was a commercial building that housed a number of local businesses as well as several garment factories that were major suppliers for a number of well-know fashion brands. The collapse took thousands of lives and injured many more. What's even more unfortunate is the fact that this incident could have been avoided. It was an horrific accident that got the world's attention, and begged the question of what consumers, as well as future leaders of tomorrow, can do to ensure that this never happens again.
Yesterday we started Fashion Revolution Week, which is an international, week-long, event aimed to raise awareness and address questions around fashion industry supply chains, including questions.
Throughout Fashion Revolution Week  consumers are asked to raise the question whomademyclothes. And brands and producers are encouraged to respond with the hashtag #imadeyourclothes and to demonstrate transparency in the supply chain.
Therefore, if you post any pictures during this week please use this #whomademyclothes! 
The fashion sector is a major global business. According to recent data, the industry is worth more than $3 trillion a year and employs 60 million people worldwide. In the USA alone, 20 billion garments are sold annually. But what some do not know is that fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world, and one of the most complex and opaque in terms of supply chain, making some products notoriously difficult to regulate. A T-shirt label might say “Made in China,” but in which of the country’s thousands of factories was this garment made? And under what conditions for workers? Changing the production and consumption patterns of this sector would have a domino effect on many aspects of development and provide a visible and meaningful contribution to the achievement of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes the Sustainable Development Goals.
But its not only about meeting SDGs, companies today need to also consider remaining sustainable going into the future. According to the State of Fashion 2018 report by BoF & McKinsey, 60% global millennials are willing to spend more on brands that are sustainable. 
So, let's take action and let's join the Fashion Revolution!

Bio-Fashion Events: Fashion Revolution

Rethinking Fashion Sustainability - SAVE THE DATE!


Rethinking Fashion Sustainability è l’evento organizzato da Fashion Technology Accelerator di 
Milano sul tema della sostenibilità nel settore della moda e del lusso. 
La seconda edizione si terrà giovedì 8 Marzo presso la sede di Boston Consulting Group in piazza Duomo.
In particolare il tema dell’evento sarà come rendere il settore moda e lusso più sostenibile da un punto di vista ambientale sociale, attraverso il supporto dell’innovazione tecnologicaSi parlerà dunque di nuovi modelli di business che spingono il consumatore verso una logica di contenimento dei consumi in favore di un consumo di maggiore qualità, dell’utilizzo di tecnologia blockchain per rendere l’intera filiera tacciabile e dunque che possa spingere i brand verso pratiche sostenibili. Si approfondirà il concetto di economia circolare, ovvero come passare da un approccio di riduzione dei danni e dell’impatto negativo generato verso un modello sostenibile fin dalla progettazione dell’intero ciclo di vita di un prodotto o progetto. 
L’agenda prevede la testimonianza di brand che con approcci diversi hanno sviluppato best practice o stanno lanciando iniziative sul tema: Miroglio Textile presenterà le sue iniziative legate alla riduzione dell’impatto ambientale nella produzione e lavorazione del tessuto, Vivienne Westwood parlerà della propria strategia di sostenibilità durante un'intervista con Francesca Romana Rinaldi, direttore del corso New Sustainable Fashion del Milano Fashion Institute.
